CBD for Tinnitus: Is It Effective?

More than 40 million Americans suffer from tinnitus. Ear ringing, whistling, and buzzing can be annoying. It deprives people of quality of life, which in turn can lead to depression, anxiety, and frustration. Up to 25% of Americans will develop tinnitus at some point in their lives.

Having a constant ringing in your inner ear can also disrupt your sleeping patterns and turn into insomnia and poor quality of sleep.

There are various treatments for tinnitus, all of which aim at easing the symptoms. Sound therapy, the avoidance of loud noises, noise cancellation equipment, behavioral therapy, and mental management of the condition are the most common treatments to date.

With more research going into the CBD found in Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil and its potential, there are some preliminary trials on CBD and its effect on tinnitus. Initial findings are inconclusive regarding the direct effectiveness of CBD on tinnitus. However, it may be best if tinnitus sufferers avoid CBD until we know more about the subject.

This article explains what the latest studies on CBD and tinnitus show.

What Is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a condition that makes the brain believe there are ringing, buzzing, and whistling sounds, when in fact, there are not.

Tinnitus can be either mildly chronic or can have acute episodes.

It is still unclear what causes tinnitus. Circulatory problems, past ear injuries, ear infections, and old age, are all linked with tinnitus.

Sometimes, tinnitus can also be a side symptom of a different condition, such as thyroid problems, earwax concentration, foreign objects lodged in the ear, or some neurological conditions. In this case, solving the actual health problem will relieve the patient of the tinnitus symptoms.

How Does Tinnitus Manifest Itself?

Tinnitus manifests itself as overstimulation in the ear cochlea. This overstimulation can be due to loud noises that have damaged the inner ear or damaged hair cells located in the cochlea.

What Is the Relationship between Tinnitus and Epilepsy?

Researchers are looking into the possibility that both tinnitus and epilepsy are caused by increased stimulation of the brain cells, sending signals to the brain that overwhelm it.

There is a CBD-based drug called Epidiolex for some rare forms of children’s epilepsy. The medical community is examining whether CBD and Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil might have an equally beneficial effect on tinnitus, if the effects on the brain are similar to epilepsy’s.

Why Does the Medical Community Want to Study CBD and Tinnitus?

Let’s take a quick tour of how CBD works in the human body.

Our body is equipped with an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that is responsible for regulating and keeping in balance numerous bodily functions such as reproduction, appetite, mood, inflammation, pain, and temperature perception among others. Whenever our body feels out of balance, our ECS is asked to intervene to recover our health.

Our ECS works with two cannabinoids called 2-AG and anandamide. These cannabinoids work with two receptors, named CB1 and CB2, when something is amiss.

Research has shown that CBD is closely related to 2-AG: it acts in a similar way and performs similar functions in the human body. At first, scientists assumed that CBD could supplement 2-AG’s action. Further studies, however, showed that the interaction is more complex than that. It is now believed that CBD helps the ECS restore the body’s balance and health by helping it work better and more efficiently.

Studies have shown that the CB1 and CB2 receptors are active when it comes to hearing disorders. Hence the interest in studying CBD’s potential in alleviating tinnitus and its annoying symptoms.

What Do We Know About CBD and Tinnitus?

There is very little research regarding CBD and tinnitus.

A study on rats found that CBD worsened the symptoms of tinnitus on rats in 29% of the cases. The results suggest that cannabinoids may promote the development of tinnitus, especially when there is pre-existing hearing damage.

However, rats and humans are physically different. Also, CBD may be biphasic, i.e. have one effect at one dosage and its opposite at another. Therefore, further studies involving humans should establish whether CBD and Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil have any negative impact on tinnitus in humans as well.

How Can CBD Help with the Side Effects of Tinnitus?

While the studies conducted so far regarding CBD and tinnitus are inconclusive, CBD may still help with the side effects of tinnitus—assuming it doesn’t negatively affect tinnitus.

Because tinnitus can be chronic, it quickly wears off people’s mental stamina and can lead to anxiety, depression, and even suicide.

Anxiety and Depression

CBD may help support a healthy mood because it interacts with the GABA neurotransmitter.

Low levels of GABA are associated with anxiety and depression. CBD and Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil may help our brains use more effectively its existing endocannabinoids. When these work more efficiently, they help the brain maintain healthy GABA levels and hence stave off feelings of anxiety and stress.

Likewise, the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain interact with the levels of another neurotransmitter, serotonin. Again, low levels of serotonin are linked to anxiety and depression. CBD seems to help our brain maintain healthy serotonin levels.

Insomnia and Sleeplessness

When you feel more relaxed and less anxious, inevitably, you will have better sleep quality. Research suggests that CBD helps with anxiety-related occasional sleeplessness.

Aside from the indirect possible effects of CBD on sleep quality, some preliminary findings suggest that CBD may help with REM sleep, which is when our brain truly relaxes and renews itself. Again, this could be significant in the case of people suffering from poor sleep quality on occasion.
