Thyroid Health and CBD

Did you know that a tiny gland on your neck controls such varied functions as your mood, body temperature perception, and metabolism, among others? That’s the thyroid, a gland situated in front of your trachea.

And yet, there are occasions when the thyroid gets out of sync. When the thyroid is imbalanced, the body feels the effects. Sometimes, the symptoms of thyroid malfunctioning can be quite severe.

Auto-immune disorders, bacterial infections, stress, and other issues can affect thyroid function and lead it to under- or over-perform. The most significant culprit for thyroid problems is inflammation. The body inflames the area around the thyroid gland to protect it against real or perceived enemies. However, this can destroy the thyroid.

Cannabinoids like CBD may carry significant anti-inflammatory properties. This has led researchers to explore both CBD’s potential in rebalancing thyroid health but also the possibility that CBD may help your thyroid retain its optimal health by keeping inflammation at bay.

What Is the Thyroid?

The thyroid is a gland located in the front of your neck, just in front of your airway. Its characteristic butterfly shape makes it easy to recognize.

The thyroid communicates with the brain through the secretion of hormones. Specifically, the thyroid gland is in direct communication with the pituitary gland, a tiny pea-sized gland in the brain. The pituitary gland alerts the thyroid to produce more thyroid hormones when it senses that these are too low. The pituitary gland is itself alerted by the hypothalamus, another brain part.

Therefore, the sequence of events is that the hypothalamus tells the pituitary gland to order the thyroid produce more thyroid hormones. The interchange of hormones and messages between the thyroid and the brain ensures the thyroid is in balance and regulates all its functions at an optimal level.

What Does the Thyroid Do?

The thyroid regulates your metabolism with the help of two main thyroid hormones called T4 and T3.

The Thyroid Controls Your Metabolism

We often talk of metabolism, but what does that mean exactly? Metabolism is the process of turning the food you ingest into energy for your body cells. The food you eat helps your body keep working. To stay healthy, there must be a balance between what you eat and how much energy your body requires to cover all its needs and keep itself in balance.

What Does Metabolism Do?

Your metabolism affects many functions such as your body’s temperature, how you turn your calories into energy, how fast your heart beats, and countless more. Have you ever noticed how you may feel cold or be grumpy when you are hungry? These physical responses are all related to your metabolism.

Your metabolism is even involved in how well your skin looks and whether your hair falls out. If your body manages to use the energy it gets properly, your skin will look radiant. If the food you take in is not properly turned into energy, you may experience dry skin or hair loss.

When the thyroid is well-balanced, your metabolism works in perfect harmony. Conversely, when your thyroid gland starts malfunctioning, your metabolism takes a hit. Depending on whether your thyroid produces too many or too few thyroid hormones, you will feel the effects on your body.

If your thyroid is underperforming, your metabolism rate slows down and your body can’t turn the entire food intake into energy. You may put on weight and experience symptoms such as constipation, fatigue, and sensitivity to cold.

If your thyroid is overperforming, your metabolism rate speeds up to the point where you may experience the opposite effects. You may lose weight, your hair may fall, your heart rate may increase, and you may even have vision problems.

Thyroid and Inflammation

Inflammation is the most common reason for thyroid malfunction. Sometimes, our own body attacks itself for reasons that are still unclear. This leads to auto-immune diseases such as Hashimoto’s, where our immune system attacks the thyroid, produces inflammation around the gland, and slowly destroys it.

How Can You Treat a Thyroid Condition?

People who suffer from a thyroid condition need to rebalance their hormones.

Rebalancing an underperforming thyroid is easier than treating an overperforming one. If your thyroid doesn’t produce enough hormones, usually all you need to do is take extra T4 in the form of pills.

On the other hand, hyperthyroidism can be treated with antithyroid medication, radioactive iodine ablation of the thyroid gland, or surgical thyroidectomy.

Regardless of the treatment chosen, the underlying cause of most thyroid conditions is inflammation. And that’s where CBD comes in.

The Endocannabinoid System and the Thyroid Gland

The body is equipped with an endocannabinoid system (ECS), which works with endocannabinoids—cannabinoids produced by the body—to maintain its balance.

Endocannabinoids attach to their respective receptors and interact with brain neurotransmitters and other body parts to help maintain the body’s balance and overall optimal functioning. Two cannabinoid receptors, called CB1 and CB2, are spread throughout the body.

A 2002 study and further research suggest that cannabinoid receptors, particularly CB1, are located in the thyroid gland, as well as the hypothalamus, which is in direct communication with the thyroid.

These findings imply that the ECS can have an impact on the thyroid and actively interacts with it.

CBD and the Endocannabinoid System

CBD is a phytocannabinoid—a cannabinoid produced by plants—that is almost identical to one of the human cannabinoids called 2-AG.

While it was first thought that CBD interacted directly with the ECS, it now seems that CBD indirectly helps the ECS to use its own cannabinoids more efficiently. It’s as if CBD is giving a helping hand to our ECS to support its function.

Therefore, researchers theorize that CBD may be able to help the ECS maintain the thyroid’s balance. This is a possibility currently under research.

Can CBD Cure Thyroid Conditions?

Ongoing research on whether CBD can alleviate thyroid conditions is promising. Even so, CBD is a supplement, not medication, and is aimed at healthy individuals wishing to promote their health.

Given CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties, research is focusing on whether CBD can stop the body from producing inflammation, thus preventing thyroid damage. Hopefully, someday we will be able to do so. Until we know more, CBD may not be used as an alternative to current thyroid medication.

Can CBD Help With Thyroid Side-Effects?

Thyroid issues affect both the body and the mind. For instance, slow metabolism is associated with depression, sluggishness, and generally feeling “down.” An overactive metabolism is linked to mood swings, hyperactivity, and difficulty in sleeping.

Research suggests that CBD may help fend off occasional anxiety, stress, and sleeping problems thanks to CBD’s interaction with brain neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. Serotonin is the ‘feel good’ neurotransmitter. Low levels of serotonin have been associated with depression. By boosting the production of serotonin, CBD may support your mood.

Likewise, GABA is a neurotransmitter that prevents the overstimulation of brain nerve cells. When GABA is not produced in sufficient quantities, the brain is overstimulated, which can lead to anxiety disorders and panic attacks. CBD may help your brain maintain healthy GABA levels, thus supporting your mental strength and inner peace.

CBD to Maintain Thyroid Health

Thyroid problems can be due to a number of causes, such as bacterial or viral infection, genetics, and radiation. Environmental factors such as stress can also trigger a thyroid condition and lead to an imbalance of the thyroid hormones.

It is hoped that the CBD and other cannabinoids found in Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil may help you maintain your thyroid health by fending off some of these causes.

CBD for Stress

Studies suggest that CBD may help support a more relaxed and less intense life. A 2015 study found that preclinical evidence “conclusively demonstrates CBD’s efficacy in reducing anxiety behaviors.” A subsequent 2019 study agreed, concluding that CBD was a promising tool for reducing anxiety and depression.

With less stress and less anxiety in your life, you may find it easier to maintain your mental balance. This balance is crucial because the connection between the brain and the thyroid relies on harmony.

Life isn’t perfect. There will always be instances of occasional stress, anxiety, and emotional upset. In such times, CBD may help you by supporting your mental and physical balance, thus upsetting your thyroid hormones as little as possible.

CBD for Inflammation

Studies suggest that CBD may help keep at bay inflammation. Inflammation is a major cause of thyroid imbalance. By fending off inflammation, you are helping your body remain strong, your health stay balanced, and your thyroid work optimally.

CBD Interaction with Thyroid Medication

If you decide to take CBD alongside your thyroid medication, you should discuss this first with your physician to learn about possible interactions between the two.

Both CBD and some thyroid medications are broken down and metabolized by the liver and the enzyme CYP450.

When CBD and thyroid medication both reach the liver simultaneously, they are in competition as to which one will reach the metabolizing enzyme first. The liver may be unable to metabolize all the compounds, leading to the thyroid medication lingering in the body for longer than it should. This may cause hyperthyroidism.

The best way to overcome this issue is to take your Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil at a different time than your thyroid medication. This way, you will give your liver plenty of time to metabolize all compounds.

CBD for Thyroid Health

Thyroid health is crucial for your whole body.

Research suggests that the endocannabinoid system weaves through the thyroid system. We are waiting for studies to explore whether CBD may be able to support thyroid health.
