CBD for Sex: What’s Love Got to Do with It?

There are many things that help us be happy in life: a pain-free body, a happy mind, good friends, and an interesting job are a few of the things that come to mind. And of course, a good sex life.

Sharing intimate moments with our partners helps our brain retain its balance. It creates closeness with our loved ones and adds satisfaction and pleasure to our lives.

Sometimes, though, a good sex life is lacking. Stress, anxiety, and depression can lead to a less than satisfying quality of sex. Other times, physical impediments stop us from enjoying sex and turn our sex life into a painful act.

In search of helpful compounds to improve their sex life, some people turn to CBD and Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil. Because CBD has been displayed to have anti-anxiety and anti-depression properties, couples are experimenting with CBD to relax and achieve an improved sex life.

As CBD becomes more mainstream, more research will be directed towards establishing whether CBD can help with other sex issues such as erectile dysfunction, low libido, and painful sexual intercourse. Here is what we know so far.

The Human Endocannabinoid System and Sex

Our body is endowed with an endocannabinoid system (ECS), which controls and regulates numerous functions such as mood, appetite, inflammation, pain perception, temperature perception, memory, and reproduction, among others. Our ECS’s responsibility is to keep our bodies in balance.

Our ECS works with two endocannabinoids—cannabinoids produced by the body—called 2-AG and anandamide. These cannabinoids are produced when our body is out of sync.

For instance, when we are hot, our ECS sends its endocannabinoids to make our body sweat, thus getting rid of excess heat. This is an example of the temperature perception function that ECS controls. It also sends a message to the brain to alert us that we are thirsty and we need to drink more water to hydrate properly and recoup lost water.

Our endocannabinoids attach to two receptors called CB1 and CB2, which in turn alert various neurotransmitters that something is amiss and needs to be fixed. The CB1 and CB2 receptors are located throughout the body, including the reproductive organs.

How Does CBD Interact with the Endocannabinoid System?

CBD is closely related to the endocannabinoid 2-AG, both in terms of function and composition. Research suggests that CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system and helps it work more productively.

While CBD does not seem to bind to the CB1 and CB2 receptors, it helps the ECS to produce more endocannabinoids and to also use them more effectively. By improving our ECS, CBD helps our bodies regain their balance and wellbeing.

Hence the interest of the research community in exploring the possibility that CBD might someday help with sex issues. If CBD works with the ECS and the ECS is found in reproductive organs, perhaps CBD might help with sex-related problems?

CBD for Anxiety and Stress

Sex cannot be enjoyed if your mind is stressed and you are anxious about your job or finances. It’s amazing how our minds and bodies work in tandem when it comes to sex. A peaceful, relaxed mind is highly conducive to sex. But how can we achieve that?

CBD has been researched for its relaxing and anxiolytic potential. By relieving stress, CBD and Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil may help your brain feel at peace and more open to intimacy and intercourse.

When our bodies are less stressed, our hormones are more balanced and our ECS is in better harmony. Our sex-related hormones are also better balanced. This makes sex more pleasant and natural.

CBD for Libido

According to research, CBD seems to decrease the production of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress. High levels of cortisol are also associated with lower libido.

By supporting healthy cortisol levels, CBD may thus support a healthy libido and desire for sex.

CBD for Mental Health

By interacting with the endocannabinoid system, CBD improves the effectiveness of anandamide, one of the two known endocannabinoids.

Anandamide takes its name from the Sanskrit word for ‘joy,’ as it helps our brains feel happy and joyful.

When there is more anandamide in our brains, our feelings of pleasure increase. Anandamide also delivers increased levels of oxytocin, which has been called the ‘love hormone.’ With more oxytocin in our brains and bodies, we feel closer to our loved ones and want to share intimate moments with them.

CBD for Erectile Dysfunction

More than 30 million Americans suffer from erectile dysfunction.

Research suggests that CBD may help support healthy blood pressure by releasing the pressure around heart arteries. Could it do the same to penis arteries? While this seems possible, there is scant research regarding the potential effectiveness of CBD in erectile dysfunction at the moment.
