CBD Oil and CMT Disease

More than 250,000 Americans have been diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease.

CMT is a disease that affects the peripheral nervous system and mainly the legs, feet, arms, and hands of patients. In its extreme manifestation, it weakens muscles and produces spasticity and difficulty in walking.

Because it’s a genetic disease, only symptomatic relief is available using pain relief medication and anti-inflammatories.

Patients of chronic and degenerative diseases like CMT are constantly looking for a remedy that will help them lead productive and happy lives while not causing painful and dangerous side effects. Could Hemp Oil products help patients with CMT?

What is Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) Disease?

CMT is a congenital disease. It is present from birth but starts manifesting itself in childhood and adolescence, although there have been mentions of patients exhibiting the disease in early adulthood or even later.

CMT affects the peripheral nervous system. While our central nervous system (CNS) includes the brain and spine, the peripheral nervous system refers to the nervous system outside the CNS. This includes our internal organs, arms, legs, and even the skin.

Research has shown that CMT damages the nerves of the peripheral nervous system. The damage can be either on the center of the nerve (the axon) or on its coating (the myelin sheath).

The disease attacks the nerves and breaks down the connection between the brain and nerves. As a result, the signals the brain sends are not passed properly to the muscles. This leads to muscle weakness, spasticity, cramps, numbness, and pain.

What Are the Symptoms of Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) Disease?

The most common symptoms of CMT disease occur on the legs and feet: patients experience foot deformities like a high arch on the top of the foot. This impedes walking and often requires special shoes to aid in walking.

Also, some people suffer from foot drop, i.e. the ankle fails to hold the foot properly. Instead of the foot sitting horizontally to the leg, it drops.

Other symptoms include weakened leg muscles, which manifest themselves as thin, skinny calves and legs.

Because of the problematic connection between the brain and muscles, some patients find they trip, stumble, and fall more often. Their muscles fail to interpret correctly the signals the brain sends.

Some people also experience deformities and weakness in the arms and hands as well, as the disease attacks more nerves of the peripheral nervous system.

Is There a Treatment for CMT?

Because it’s a genetic disease, currently available treatment of CMT can only alleviate the more severe symptoms and discomfort.

Patients can do physical therapy to gently strengthen their muscles. If movement is severely restricted, orthopedic braces are often used to help people regain their mobility.

Those suffering from nerve pain are given pain-relief medication.

If the disease has progressed and is affecting the hands and fingers, some patients have occupational therapy to learn how to use their hands and fingers in different ways. For instance, patients are taught to have zips instead of buttons, the latter being harder to manage with CMT disease.

Can CBD Help with CMT?

As there is no cure for CMT, patients are looking into ways to relieve their bodies of pain and recover part of their mobility. In the future, Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil may help in several areas:

  • Hemp Oil may help relieve pain
  • Hemp Oil may help with mood disorders such as depression
  • Hemp Oil may help relieve spasticity
  • Hemp Oil may work therapeutically as well by treating the wearing off of the nerves’ myelin sheath

CBD for Pain Relief

Several studies have shown that CBD has the potential to help with pain relief and that it has anti-inflammatory properties.

This is thanks to CBD’s interaction with the human endocannabinoid system (ECS). Our ECS is responsible for preserving the body’s homeostasis—its natural balance. It does this by regulating several bodily functions, including the immune system and pain perception.

The CBD in Hemp Oil appears to help our ECS work better and more effectively. Research suggests that Hemp Oil could thus help lower pain perception and restore our body’s natural balance.

This could be useful in the future, as people with CMT experience nerve pain which can be crippling. Many pain relievers have significant side effects while Hemp Oil’s side effects are minor.

Also, CMT is a chronic disease and sufferers need to take their pain medication over long periods of time. They need to have a remedy that is not addictive, nor cause organ damage or significant side effects when taken long-term. According to the World Health Organization, CBD meets all these criteria:

“In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential… CBD is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile. Reported adverse effects may be as a result of drug-drug interactions between CBD and patients’ existing medications… To date, there is no evidence of recreational use of CBD or any public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”

CBD for Depression

People with CMT often experience anxiety and depression. Their life is impaired and they can’t be fully functional and independent. Their mobility is impaired, which causes frustration and depression.

Hemp Oil can help with mental distress. CBD interacts with serotonin, a neurotransmitter linked to depression. By raising the serotonin levels in the brain, Hemp Oil may therefore help relieve mental discomfort.

CBD for Spasticity

A serious side effect of CMT is muscle spasticity. Research into CBD for multiple sclerosis suggests that CBD could help with the spasticity associated with this disease.

Although CMT differs from multiple sclerosis, in both cases patients can experience spasticity. Hemp Oil could provide welcome relief and mitigation of these side effects. Of course, further research is needed to confirm this hypothesis.

CBD as a Cure

A 2012 clinical trial showed that “CBD is a good candidate […] with significant therapeutic potential for the treatment of demyelinating pathologies.”

CMT is caused by the wearing off of the myelin sheath—a process called demyelination. Perhaps CBD could prove someday to be a cure for CMT, rather than just a botanical compound that helps with symptoms.

More Research Is Necessary

It should be stressed that we may still be decades away from using Hemp Oil to treat CMT.

Right now, Hemp Oil is a supplement aimed at healthy individuals who wish to support their health. Anyone suffering from a disease or condition must use medicines under the guidance of their physician.

Before a compound can be approved for therapeutic use, large-scale clinical trials must first be conducted. This is not a mere formality. The FDA must study not only the compound’s efficacy but also any contraindications, interactions with other medicines, and dosage, among others. Unfortunately for CMT sufferers, this is a slow—but necessary—process that can take years. Click here to learn about CBD for Lyme Disease.

Synchronicity Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil Products

Our team at Synchronicity has developed a full range of Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil products, including capsules and tinctures.

Our products are made from our proprietary Hemp plants that we plant and grow sustainably in Colorado. Our Hemp plants have been chosen for their high CBD content and very low THC content.

We have also established our own extraction process, called LipidTrans™, that doesn’t use harsh chemicals like CO2 and ethanol. Our method infuses Hemp plants in coconut oil or MCT oil, which we then gently press by hand to extract all the wellness of Hemp into the carrier oil. As a result, the final product has no chemical residues or unwanted substances.

Likewise, we believe in the full benefits of Hemp. Rather than isolating CBD, we give our customers the wholesomeness of whole-plant Hemp. Our Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil products are teeming with CBD and other cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, minerals, and vitamins.

Research suggests that Hemp’s compounds work more effectively in tandem rather than consumed individually. This is the so-called entourage effect. Synchronicity’s Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil lets you experience the True Entourage Effect™.
